There are 24 elected members of Council including the President and two Vice-Presidents. They occupy 20 Consultant seats, two Staff and Associate Specialist seats and two Trainee seats.

Council members are elected from the Fellowship and Membership of the College. Those who wish to be nominated to stand for election to Council are invited to apply in September each year following the announcement on the College website detailing which seats will become vacant in the following March. There are three categories of vacancy:
Consultant member
There are 20 Consultant members of Council who are elected by Fellows and Associate Fellows. These positions are renewable. The first term of service for the candidate elected to this vacancy is six years and the second term is four years. Vacancies arise either from resignations or after completion of a term of service. Those eligible to stand are Fellows by Election, Fellows ad eundem, and Fellows by examination of the College of four or more years standing complying with the conditions of the Ordinances and Regulations.
Staff and Associate Specialist member (SAS)
There are two SAS members of Council elected by Fellows, Associate Fellows, Members and Associate Members. These positions
are renewable. The first term of service for the candidate elected to this vacancy is four years and the second term is four years. Vacancies arise either from resignations or after completion of a term of service. Those eligible to stand are Fellows and Members of the College complying with the conditions of the Ordinances and Regulations, who, on election, are not a consultant nor a trainee.
Trainee member
There are two trainee members of Council elected by those Fellows by examination in their first four years of Fellowship. These positions are not renewable. The term of service for the candidate elected to this vacancy is four years. Vacancies arise either from resignations or after completion of a term of service. Those eligible to stand are Fellows by examination of the College complying with the conditions of the Ordinances and Regulations who, on election, have not completed four years from the date of admittance to the Fellowship.

Election of President and Vice-Presidents
The President and Vice-Presidents of the Royal College of Anaesthetists are elected in a ballot by the elected Council members. The President is elected with a maximum term of office of three years and re-election on an annual basis. There
are two Vice-Presidents who are elected on an annual basis for a maximum period of two years. The Presidents and Vice-Presidents take office in September of each year following elections at the June Council meeting.
Council Meetings
Meetings of Council take place on a monthly basis excluding the month of August. Meetings normally happen on the third Wednesday of each month and are held in the Council Chamber at Churchill House. The Committees of Council meet at various times throughout the year reporting back to the full Council meeting. Details of the Committees and their membership can be found on the Committee pages.
