Consultant Outcomes Data

The RCoA supports NHS England’s commitment to providing patients with more public information about their care.  The individual results of around 5,000 consultant surgeons have been published on the MyNHS website (NHS Choices).  Greater transparency in the NHS, informed, honest conversations, shared responsibility and coordinated care pathways are all essential in improving patient care and outcomes.  The best outcomes for patients are dependent on the ability to leverage the skills and abilities of the entire perioperative care team in the service of the patient.

The College recognises that there are challenges in collecting and interpreting this data that will need to be addressed over time, but believes that any mechanism that offers the opportunity for reflection, peer review and shared learning is to be welcomed.

Consultant outcomes data is just one way in which the RCoA is committed to ensuring that patients receive information and a higher quality of care.
