Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After pre-registration posts at the Middlesex (medicine) and Central Middlesex (surgery) Hospitals he spent six months each in GP and Obstetrics before training in anaesthesia: SHO & registrar at St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth (1968-70); registrar & SR at the Westminster Hospital London (1970-4), spending 6 months on an exchange in Stockholm. Appointed consultant to West Dorset Hospital in 1974, remaining there until retirement in 2005, continuing part-time for 3 more years.

Professional interests and activities

Did much to establish anaesthesia and related services in West Dorset, laying the foundations for a successful department.  His main professional interest was intensive care, and he set up the first specialist unit in the area.  He also attracted high quality trainees to the hospital and was very supportive of theatre staff.

Other biographical information

A member of a medical family (father was a GP), he was married to Linda (a nurse he met at the Middlesex) and they had a son (James, also an anaesthetist) and two daughters.  Childhood visits to cousins in France left him with a love of that country, especially its language, culture, food and wine.  Having enjoyed his time in Oxford, he was a regular supporter of College reunions.
