Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Margery Adela Pollock trained in the Adelaide Hospital, Dublin and in Manchester, where she was encouraged to move into Anaesthetics. Appointed as a consultant at the Manchester Children’s Hospital as well as the Salford Royal Infirmary in 1953. Dr Pollock later became a consultant at the City and Musgrave Park Hospitals, Belfast in 1955. She retired in 1982. Unconfirmed information indicates that she may have been the youngest and first female consultant to be appointed in Northern Ireland. When first appointed as a Consultant, she was a little peeved that she was not paid the full consultant salary as she was deemed to be too young! She was awarded an Honorary FFARCSI in 1971.

Other biographical information

Dr Pollock was married to Robert Moore Kirkpatrick in 1957, a general practitioner from North Antrim; she balanced her professional and family life admirably. She is described as being sociable in domestic and professional settings and  retired in 1982 to further her  interests in travel and gardening. Sadly her last few years saw a steady decline in her fine intellect. She was predeceased by her husband in 1986, leaving three children, two of whom are doctors.
