Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

First three apppintments were as resident casualty officer & anaesthetist at the Metropolitan Hospital, house surgeon, Royal Sussex Couty Hospital, and RMO Pembury Hospital, Tunbridge Wells after which he went into GP in Eltham. In 1934 he became honorary anaesthetist to St John’s Hospital, Lewisham, adding the same appointment at Woolwich Memorial Hospital in 1938 when he took up full-time anaesthesia. He added appointments to Princess Beatrice, Royal Waterloo & National Dental (UCH) Hospital in 1939, but from 1940 worked for the EMS in London and became consultant anaesthetist to the American Hospital in Britain. After the war he returned to his earlier hospitals, becoming senior anaesthetist at Woolwich, but also working at Moorfields Hospital. In 1955 he took the unusual step of working abroad for a year as chief anaesthetist, Kantonsspital, St Gallen, Switzerland.

Professional interests and activities

A significant proportion of his appointments prior to entering GP were to inrease his experience of paediatrics, but as an anaesthetist he worked hard to promote safety in the specialty. His time in Switzerland was spent widening his exposure both anaesthesia and teaching, but his early death will have cut short the benefits.

Other biographical information

He was married to Nora Mary Puckle and they had two daughters. In parallel to his interest in safety in anaesthesia he was an early promotor of measures to improve road safety also. Music, especially opera, was a major interest, and he became interested in farming towards the end of his life.
