Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

Returned to Sheffield after working as casualty officer, house physician and clinical assistant at St Thomas’s to join his father in general practice, and was appointed honorary anaesthetist at the Royal Hospital in 1923. In 1939 he also became visiting anaesthetist, Rotherham Hospital, adding Jessop Hospital for Women, Sheffield in 1948 and the Municipal General Hospital, Rotherham in 1949. He retired circa 1960.

Professional interests and activities

As an instructor in anaesthetics for the University of Sheffield his teaching was much appreciated by his students.

Other biographical information

Undergraduate studies were interrupted when he volunteered for the army, serving as a temporary Captain with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and being wounded on the 1st day of the Somme in 1916. He served as both treasurer and president of the Sheffield and East Midland Society of Anaesthetists, and was elected an honorary life member in 1972.

Married to Katherine Edith Violet Cuff, they had two daughters, Katherine Elizabeth and Mary Roxane (Cuff), both of whom married, and a grandson Rory Herbert (son of Mary).

An enthusiastic Freemason, he held high provincial rank.
