College Representation on Advisory Appointments Committees (AACs)

The statutory function of the College to nominate assessors to sit on Advisory Appointments Committees (AACs) is regarded as an important part of the maintenance and improvement of standards of practice in anaesthesia. The College nominates assessors to attend AACs for the appointment of consultant and non-consultant posts in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. In 2009 Scotland adopted a different appointment process. The relevant legislation governing appointments in Scotland is available here.
For further information about the regulations governing AACs please refer to the National Health Service (Appointment of Consultants) Regulations: Good Practice Guidance (January 2005). This document provides good practice guidance on the NHS (Appointment of Consultants) Regulations 1996 (Statutory Instruments 2004 No.3365) in Annex A: Stages in the setting up of an Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC). The 1996 Regulations and subsequent amendments do not apply to NHS Foundation Trusts although the College recommends that they can follow this guidance when appointing to a consultant post. Please be aware that both the regulations and the Good Practice Guidance apply to England only.
