This one day CPD Study Day is designed to update dedicated obstetric anaesthetists as well as those who cover obstetric anaesthetic services in their hospitals either on a regular or ad hoc basis.

We have programmed a mixed range of lectures by excellent speakers leading in their field, covering physiology and pharmacology as well as various clinical scenarios. Maternal critical care remains a difficult area of care that needs addressing by our profession and there is an update on understanding and dealing with catastrophic disasters such as a maternal cardiac arrest. Multidisciplinary simulation drills are increasingly used to improve team working and promoting safety and we provide an overview on this field of training. Updates on neuraxial block, complications of caesarean sections, airway issues, patient consent and alternative methods of pain relief in labour are addressed. Finally anaesthesia in austere environments gives us a global perspective and encourages us to reflect upon those who lack our resources and challenges us to seek ways of helping where we can.

Lectures on the day may include:
  • Update on central neuraxial blockade in obstetrics
  • Fluid, electrolytes, blood and blood products
  • Is it possible to have evidence-based early recognition of obstetric illness?
  • Maternal critical care
  • Cardiac arrest in the labour ward
  • Update on informed consent post Montgomery
  • Team working drills in the labour ward - is simulation the answer?
  • Intraoperative complications of a C-Section
  • Anticipated and unanticipated difficult intubation in obstetrics
  • Obstetric anaesthesia in the austere environment - back to basics
