The Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group (SALG) are delighted to host the annual Patient Safety Conference at the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh on 30th November 2016.
This is a single-day meeting which consists of lectures, each of which is followed by ample time for discussion and networking opportunities. It is intended for doctors engaged in clinical anaesthesia, pain management and intensive care medicine who have an interest in improving patient safety.
Experts will present up-to-date information on a wide range of patient safety related topics, and we are delighted to confirm that the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, Dr Catherine Calderwood and Shona Robison, MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport will both be addressing the conference.  
Lectures on the day include:
  • Preventing adverse events
  • The culture of safety, from ideal to real
  • Keynote address: Realising realistic medicine for patient safety
  • Update from the Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group
  • Update from the AAGBI
  • HALT – breaking down hierarchies in theatres
  • Pharmaceutical safety – impacts of overprescribing
  • Neuraxial connectors implementation
  • Implementing IT systems safely

Abstract Competition 

Trainees are welcome to submit an abstract entry outlining a patient safety project that they have completed.
Submissions will be assessed and the authors of the highest-scoring abstracts in the preliminary review will be invited to present their work orally. A prize will be awarded for the best short presentation (five minutes with two minutes for discussion), based on the presentation itself and the ensuing discussion. The next ten highest scoring abstract authors will be invited to present a poster.
Abstracts should detail a project or an initiative with interesting outcomes relevant to the wider audience, and demonstrate an understanding of current thinking and challenges in patient safety.
