College ACCEA Nominations 2018 Round

William Harrop-Griffiths will again be leading the process this year with administrative support provided by my Executive Assistant, Sarah Thomas.

ACCEA will open the 2018 round on Tuesday 13 February and it will close at 5.00 pm on Thursday 12 April 2018, thus allowing approximately eight weeks to complete the process. On this basis, the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ process will run to the timetable below.

The College will accept applications from consultants for new Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, and will conduct a scoring, ranking and nomination process in accordance with ACCEA guidance.

The College can also support applications for renewal of awards by including application forms in the scoring process and submitting citations on behalf of renewal applicants. Although renewal application forms will not be ranked or nominated, we will provide feedback to applicants on their forms.

Tuesday 27 February 2018, by 9.00 am

This is the absolute deadline for consultants who wish to apply for Bronze, Silver and Gold national awards to submit application forms.

It is also the deadline for those renewal applicants who wish the College to score and comment on their forms.

Forms should be submitted as Word documents to

Please identify the name and email address of one citation writer and include this information in your email submission. The citation writer should be a colleague who knows of your work but who is not also an employee of your employer. Please ask your citation writer to draft the citation in accordance with our guidance well in advance of the date that it may be requested.

Bronze applications will be forwarded by the College to Regional Co-ordinators for review; they will offer you guidance if appropriate. If you are advised to amend your form please submit the revised version to no later than 9.00 am, Monday 12 March 2018.

Silver and Gold applications will not be shared with Regional Co-ordinators.

Friday 23 March 2018

The National Ranking Meeting will take place at the College on Friday 23 March 2018. Regional Co-ordinators will communicate the outcome of the meeting to applicants.

Citations will be required for those applicants which the College agrees to support. The College will contact citation writers identified by applicants by email to request citations. The deadline for citations is 9.00 am, Thursday 29 March 2018.

2018 Round Closes

As in 2017, there will be 300 national awards for England and 16-18 for Wales. The College is only able to support up to 25 Bronze, 8 Silver and 2 Gold applications for new awards. It is therefore imperative that we only submit applications of the highest quality that stand a significant chance of success.

If your Trust does not award local points please include this in your CVQ along with an indication of when you were last able to apply for local points, and please ask the Medical Director/Chief Executive to reflect this in their citation.

The guides to applicants are available on the ACCEA website and have changed little from the 2017 round guides. We would like to highlight the following, the details of which are available on the ACCEA website:

  • Clarification has been provided that consultants moving into general management with a management contract are not eligible for awards.
  • Clarification has been provided relating to eligibility for awards following investigations and disciplinary procedures.
  • Further guidance has been provided relating to consultants working in Trusts in Special Measures.
  • Further guidance has been provided for applicants regarding how to prioritise evidence, concentrating on evidence from the last five years or since the date of the last award.
  • There is now a requirement for applicants to explain any income received from wider roles that may be relevant to the evidence provided in their application.
  • Clarification has been provided regarding award holders who take maternity leave.
  • If there are extenuating circumstances that have affected your application, such as ill health in yourself or a close family member, you should inform the ACCEA secretariat as soon as possible, i.e. before the deadline for submission. Although the extenuating circumstances should be mentioned in your application, you should have contacted the secretariat separately before submitting your application.

I must emphasise again that this is a totally electronic submission process and that it is the responsibility of the individual nominee (and not the College or the Trust) to ensure that their application is submitted electronically to ACCEA by its deadline. The College’s only responsibility is to produce a ranked list of nominations, accompanied by national citations for each nominee, submitted by e-mail.

With best wishes

Dr Liam Brennan FRCA
