Qualified from St Bartholomews Medical College in 1980 and trained in anaesthesia in London and Cambridge before being appointed as a consultant in Bury St Edmunds. His clinical interest areas are obstetric anaesthesia and acute pain management. He has always been involved in anaesthetic postgraduate training and has held positions of College Tutor and Regional Adviser before becoming Head of School and Associate Postgraduate Dean in the East of England, and in hospital management as a Clinical Director for Day Surgery. Editor of the RCoA Bulletin 2013-2014.

He is married to Christine, a senior clinical nurse specialist in pain management, and has two children currently in University based postgraduate studies and three border collies.
