Academy of Medical Royal Colleges issues guidance on winter pressures

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has today issued guidance to clinicians and hospital managers on coping with the additional pressures on the healthcare system caused by winter.

The guidance provides practical examples of how to deal with the expected increase in admissions over the winter period, such as:

  • Asking all hospital staff to recognise that ‘it is everyone’s problem’ and is not just limited to staff working in Emergency Departments even though that is where the pressure is most visible
  • Reminding doctors that patient care comes before targets
  • Managers should lend a hand when and if they can. The simple act of ‘organising a pizza delivery for hard-pressed doctors and nurses can buy an awful lot of goodwill.’

The Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland recently published a joint statement on winter service pressures, which can be found here.
