Election to the RCoA Scottish Board 2018: Nominations

Nominations for election to the Scottish Board of the Royal College of Anaesthetists are now open. The vacancies and timetable are set out below.

Please note these elections are separate to the Council elections which close on 4 December 2017.

Prospective candidates can read about the board’s work and objectives and are invited to discuss the expected contribution, time commitment and opportunities of the role with the chair Dr Sarah Ramsay (Sarah.Ramsay@ggc.scot.nhs.uk).


  • Three consultant vacancies. There are five consultant members of the board who are elected for a term of three years and are eligible for re-election for one further term of three years.  Those eligible to stand are fellows of the College (either by examination or ad eundem) working in Scotland who are on the specialist register of the GMC. Please note that eligibility is based on the main address that is registered with the College.
  • One trainee vacancy. The trainee member of the board is elected for a single term of three years.  The elected trainee will normally be expected to resign within one year of appointment as a consultant. Those eligible to stand are trainees training in Scotland registered with the College holding the FRCA.  Please note that eligibility is based on the main address that is registered with the College.
  • There is no SAS vacancy this year.

Election timetable

6 November 2017 – Nominations open
Those who wish to be nominated to stand are invited to self-nominate and submit the completed form contained in the following links. Please note that names on the ballot will appear in the order that they are received.

Detailed instructions are included, however please note:

  • the Form of Notice of Intention to Stand for Election must be signed (an electronic signature is acceptable)
  • the Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form must be completed
  • the Candidate’s Election Statement is optional but please note the statement must not exceed 200 words and should contain brief details of the candidate’s career in anaesthesia and reasons for standing. All statements received will be included as part of the ballot information.

4 December 2017: Nominations close
All completed nomination forms must be received in the chief executive’s office (details below).  Any forms received after this date will not be accepted.

4 December 2017: Finalisation of ballot details
This is also the final date for those voting to ensure the contact details the RCoA holds are correct. Election is by email only. Fellows who have not advised the college of their email or have changed their email address are requested to give notice to the membership team via subs@rcoa.ac.uk by 3 December 2017.

12 December 2017: Ballot begins
All those eligible to vote will be invited to do so by email.

11 January 2018: Close of ballot
Electronic voting will be closed at 5pm. The election results will be declared via the College website as soon as possible. The result will also be published in the College Bulletin.

20 February 2018: Scottish Board Meeting
All candidates are requested to hold the date of the February 2018 Scottish Board in their diaries. Further 2018 Board dates are 19 June and 23 October. Meetings are held at the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh and start at 10:30, finishing approximately by 15:00.
