RCoA’s response to the High Court decision regarding the case of Dr Bawa-Garba

The RCoA has been following the High Court case regarding Dr Bawa-Garba closely in recent months and we extend our sympathy to everyone affected by this tragic case of the death of a child.

We support the initial comments in the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges’ statement published earlier today. Like them, while recognising the Court’s decision we are concerned that this judgement raises many issues for the medical profession and will be a cause of great anxiety to many doctors, especially at a time when the NHS is under unprecedented pressure. We will liaise with the General Medical Council and the AoMRC to consider the wider implications for patient safety, reflections on practice and learning that arise from this case and will issue further advice and comment in due course.
