RCoA response to GMC’s Medical Licensing Assessment

Responding to the General Medical Council (GMC)’s approval of a Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), Dr Liam Brennan, President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, said: “The Royal College of Anaesthetists welcomes the GMC's proposals to proceed with the introduction of the Medical Licensing Assessment.

“Patients deserve the assurance that all doctors commencing practice in the UK can deliver safe, high-quality clinical care.

“The introduction of a knowledge test is a promising start. We hope that this will be the prelude to the GMC including, as part of the MLA, standardised assessments of core clinical skills and professionalism, which are also fundamental tenets of good medical practice.”
