RCoA statement on the report into hyponatraemia-related deaths in Northern Ireland

Responding to the publication of the joint response to Justice O’Hara’s report about hyponatremia-related deaths in Northern Ireland, Dr Darrell Lowry, Chair of the Royal College of Anaesthetists Northern Irish Board, said:
Firstly, our thoughts are with the families of the five children who tragically died and were the subject of this inquiry.

“Improving patient safety is at the heart of this joint response. The Royal College of Anaesthetists, along with the three other medical specialties involved, are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure lessons are learned to minimise the chance of any patient in the future coming to harm in similar circumstances.

“With over 20 per cent of anaesthetic practice in the UK dedicated to services for children under the age of 16, it is absolutely vital to establish and maintain a safe and effective health service based on honesty, transparency and accountability. We hope the report and its recommendations result in real change to improve the delivery of children’s healthcare in Northern Ireland.”
