Response to Life Sciences Industrial Strategy

In response to today's release of the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy, Dr Liam Brennan, President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, said:

“We welcome the ambition for UK patients to be 'at the front of the queue' for innovative medical technology and treatments, but when patients do get to the front of that queue they will need to be met by skilled healthcare professionals trained to deliver the highest and safest standard of care.

“This Strategy sends the right signals for life sciences, but the NHS cannot harness the best technology without the benefit of the best clinicians and we cannot ignore the uncertain Brexit environment in which this Strategy is launched.  UK life sciences is a world-leading sector and its international reputation will only be enhanced by maintaining an international perspective in developing the healthcare and scientific workforce.

“The Medical Royal Colleges are the best route through which to engage medical professionals in a thriving life sciences environment and the ambition for greater collaboration between charities, government and industry is welcome.  The establishment of a Healthcare Advanced Research Programme (HARP) will be a positive development as part of a funding package which can facilitate the translation of research into practical applications for the benefit of patients."
