Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group and TIVA connectors

The Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group (SALG) met on 8 April 2009; including representatives from the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the National Patient Safety Agency. It discussed possible cases of awareness under total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) due to the possible incorrect use of multi lumen i.v. sets without non return valves.

As a result of this, the NPSA are finalising a consultation paper with a view to issuing a RRR (Rapid Response Report). They will be seeking as broad a consultation as possible with the strong support of the SALG and its membership. In the meantime, the purpose of this notification is to highlight the problem more widely.
