RCoA Nominations Committee announce awards

The College is delighted to announce details of awards from the May 2023 meeting of the RCoA Nominations Committee

Dr John Baird Glen (also known as Iain Glen) has been awarded the Gold Medal, our highest award to a Fellow of the College, in recognition of the vast number of patients who have benefited from the use of propofol and his sustained work over the decades to support anaesthesia.  Dr Glen retired from his post as Clinical Specialist in Anaesthesia at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals in 2000, and was head of the Independent Pharmaceutical Consultancy, Glen Pharma Limited for 15 years before retiring. Dr Glen will be presented with his award at the RCoA Annual Dinner to be held on 22 May 2024.

Professor William Harrop-Griffiths has been awarded the College Medal in recognition of his work with the COVID hub.   He is Professor of Practice (Anaesthesia) at Imperial College,

London, a Consultant Anaesthetist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London and the Civilian Consultant Advisor in Anaesthesia to the British Army. His clinical interests include anything that can be done under regional anaesthesia. Professor Harrop-Griffiths will be presented with his award at the RCoA Winter Symposium on 1 December 2023

Dr Sarah Harries has been awarded the College Medal for the leadership she has shown working with the Welsh Training Board, her work as an advocate for training and trainers in Wales and her continued work for the College over a sustained period of time.  Dr Harries is an Obstetric and Transplant Anaesthetist, University Hospital Wales, Head of School Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine Wales, Associate Dean HEIW.

Dr Liam Brennan has been awarded the College Medal in recognition of his work as CPOC Board Chair, He served as the Founding Chair of the board of CPOC and though this achieved a huge amount in holding together and building the coalition of colleges, associations and specialist organisations that form the CPOC board and the CPOC advisory group. Dr Brennan is an Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist, Cambridge University Hospitals.

Dr Alistair McNarry has been awarded the College Medal in recognition of his work as RCoA/DAS Airway Leads Advisor for the last seven years.  The Airway Lead role in each anaesthetic department, and the national role of Airway Lead Advisor were put in place following the publication of NAP4.  As the first postholder of the national role Alistair has developed it into a key College role, promoting airway safety and fostering interdepartmental collaboration across the UK.  Dr McNarry is a Consultant Anaesthetist in NHS Lothian, based at Western General and St John’s Hospitals, Edinburgh.

Dr Simon Edgar has been awarded the Dudley Buxton prize in recognition of his work as Overall lead for the Anaesthetists as Educators programme at the College. As Director of Medical Education for NHS Lothian (Edinburgh) he has a broad ranging input into high quality clinical education for Undergraduate students and Postgraduate Drs in training. His academic interests include simulation for learning, systems improvement and development of teaching faculty, alongside a key focus on the well-being and engagement of the healthcare workforce. Simon was a permanent faculty member and Educational Coordinator in the National Simulation centre for Scotland (SCSCHF) where he contributed to the development of a body of experience in non-technical skills and human factors training relating to healthcare alongside simulation for Anaesthetic practice. Dr Edgar is Director of Medical Education, NHS Lothian.  Dr Edgar will be presented with his award at the RCoA Annual Dinner to be held on 22 May 2024

Dr Rana Hafiz Ur Rehman has been awarded the President’s Commendation in recognition of his significant contribution to the development of the Medical Training Initiative (MTI) in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) and Pain Medicine.  Dr Rehman is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, Tameside General Hospital

Dr Alister Seaton has been awarded the President’s Commendation in recognition of his significant contribution representing the RCoA AiT Committee between 2019-2022.  He also served on the Anaesthetists in Training Representative Group (ATRG). He represented Anaesthetists in Training on both the Exams Committee and the Recruitment Advisory Group. Alistair was a notably hard-working member of the AiT Committee, but his work on examinations and recruitment during the Covid 19 Pandemic was extraordinary and to the lasting benefit of anaesthetists in training throughout the UK. Dr Seaton is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr Susie Thoms has been awarded the President’s Commendation in recognition of her significant contribution representing the AiT Committee since 2020, including being a representative on the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Trainee Doctors Group (ATDG). She acted as the AiT lead on the Lifelong Learning Clinical Reference Group, where she was pivotal in overseeing user surveys to find out what could be improved for members using the Lifelong Learning Platform and reinstated the role of regional leads to offer anaesthetists more local support in using the platform. Dr Susie Thoms is a Consultant Anaesthetist, Pinderfields Hospital, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Teaching Trust.  Dr Thoms will receive her award at the RCoA Diplomates Day on 8 September 2023

The Human Factors Guideline Group has been awarded the Humphry Davy award in recognition of the enormous amount of work it has done in producing the guideline papers, and to the celebrate the already evident impact that the guidelines have had on anaesthesia and wider healthcare in general. This award will be presented to representatives of the Group at the RCoA Diplomates Day on 8 September 2023

Dr Bill Kirkup CBE has been awarded the John Snow Oration in recognition of the work he has led on numerous investigations into public services failures, several of which (cardiac surgery in Oxford, maternity in Morecombe Bay and East Kent) have had direct bearing on services provided and supported by anaesthesia and critical care. Dr Kirkup is an independent reviewer and retired Associate Chief Medical Officer.

We are also delighted to announce that the following member is to be awarded the
Fellow ad Eundem

Dr Gnanashree Bangalore Krishna Murthy has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Rotherham District Hospital since 2020.  She has over 17 years of Anaesthetic experience, with good knowledge and skills in general Anaesthesia and intensive care management with Maxillo-facial surgery. She has a special interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Regional anaesthesia.  Dr Krishna Murthy will be presented with her award at the RCoA Diplomates Day to be held on 8 September 2023.
