Purpose of the Resource

This resource has been written and collated by healthcare professionals with the support of stakeholder policy groups. The aim of the resource is to:

  • provide prescribers with the information needed to support a clinical decision as to whether opioids are likely to be helpful for a patient
  • support patients, carers and healthcare teams in understanding the potential benefits and harms of opioid treatment
  • promote a culture of appropriate clinical decision making and safe prescribing and on-going care in relation to opioids for pain relief
