GMC 2018 National Training Survey Report
Commenting on the key findings from the GMC’s 2018 National Training Survey Report, Professor Ravi Mahajan, President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists said:
“We’re delighted to see that approximately nine in 10 anaesthetists in training report the quality of their experience in their posts as ‘very good’ or ‘good’.
“Maintaining the quality of training and experience in this high-pressured environment is a testament to both anaesthetists in training and those senior colleagues who deliver a positive training experience.
“The report also highlights how heavy workloads affect patient safety and fatigue is a contributing factor that collectively accounts for many doctors feeling burnt out. We’re pleased the GMC highlights the efforts of the anaesthetists in training working group on fatigue and the positive and collaborative action being taken to address this issue.
“Results of a separate survey1 of College members, of all grades, highlighted that half of anaesthetists have no access to dedicated rest facilities and that some are being charged a fee to use them. We continue to work with partners to press for free, accessible and high-quality rest facilities for our members working long, overnight shift patterns with the safety of our members, and the patients they care for, the primary concern of this College.”
