Membership categories and subscriptions
Joining the College is simple. Please see below for information on different membership categories to find the one for you.
The Royal College of Anaesthetists is the professional body responsible for the specialty of anaesthesia throughout the UK, and it ensures the quality of patient care through the maintenance of standards in anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.
If you would like to apply for membership, please complete our Become a Member questionnaire, which will help determine the most appropriate membership category for you to apply for through our online application process.

The subscription fees below are effective from 5 August 2023
Fellow by Examination
£281.00, £211.00 or £141.00 (Overseas rate dependent on location)
A registered medical practitioner who has passed the final FRCA Examinations.
Fellowship ad eundem
£281.00, £211.00 or £141.00 (Overseas rate dependent on location)
For registered medical practitioners who do not hold the final FRCA but hold a substantive consultant post in the UK at time of application.
Honorary Fellow
Individuals who are distinguished lay persons or medical practitioners of international repute, who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of anaesthesia, critical care or pain management.
Associate Fellow
£281.00, £211.00 or £141.00 (Overseas rate dependent on location)
Medical practitioners practicing anaesthesia in the UK in a substantive or honorary consultant post at the time of application.
Fellow in Training
£275.00, £207.00 or £138.00 (Overseas rate dependent on location)
An individual who has passed all of the FRCA examinations and is working towards completing the anaesthetic training programme at the College.
Member
£225.00, £169.00 or £113.00 (Overseas rate dependent on location)
Registered medical practitioner who have completed twelve months in a UK training role and has passed the Primary FRCA exam or any other examination equivalence recognised by the Council.
Associate Member
Registered medical practitioner in the UK not holding a consultant position but working in anaesthesia, critical care or pain medicine and does not hold the Primary FRCA examinations or any other equivalence noted under the Member category.
Anaesthetist in Training
All anaesthetists in training are required to be registered with the College. Please complete a trainee registration form.
Affiliate
Individuals who are not registered medical practitioners but have an interest in the development or delivery of anaesthesia, critical care, pain medicine or perioperative medicine.
Senior Fellows and Members Club
Fellows and members of the College, who have come to the end of their career and have fully retired.
Foundation Years Doctor
Current foundation doctors in years 1, 2 and beyond.
Medical Student
Undergraduate students studying medicine.
International Affiliate
Registered medical professional working and residing outside the UK working in anaesthesia, critical care or pain medicine who does not hold the Primary or Final FRCA examinations, or any other equivalence noted under the Member category.
Change in circumstances?
Where possible, the College provides support to its Fellows and Members, and if you find your circumstances have changed, please click on the below options for details on how we might be able to help.
To better support the wide variety of contracts and working patterns of our Fellows and Members, the College has a less than full time (LTFT) membership rate, which is valid for one year of membership and a new self-declaration form requesting this discount is required each year.
Criteria for eligibility:
- working fewer than eight programmed activities (including supporting professional activities) per week
- work less than 0.80 or 79%, and below, whole time equivalent.
Discount available:
- application received before or within three months of membership fee payment date = 25%
- application received after three months of membership fee payment date but within six months =18%
- application received after six months of membership fee payment date will be applied to your next membership renewal.
If you would like to apply for this discount please download and complete the self-declaration form, and email it back to the Membership Engagement team via membership@rcoa.ac.uk.
For each membership year we require a new form to apply the discount, so please be aware that this is not automatically applied and we may ask you to re-submit the form.
Please note, if you have retired from substantive clinical work, you are not eligible for this discount but you can request to change your membership category to be that of Senior Fellows and Members Club (SFMC). For full details of the SFMC membership please visit this webpage.
If you are on, or due to be on, maternity leave or extended parental leave or adoption leave, you can apply to have your membership without a fee for twelve months.
Let us know about your leave as soon as you can so we can support you. For us to provide you with this discount we do require notice before or during your leave. If you notify us after your leave we are unable to back date the discount.

Are you on, or have been on, long-term sick leave for six months or more? If yes, you can apply for a supported subscription, which reduces your membership fee to £57.00.
You can apply for this discount by downloading and completing the self-declaration form, and emailing it to the Membership Engagement team via membership@rcoa.ac.uk.
You can call the Membership Engagement team on 020 7092 1700, Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00 if you would prefer to discuss this option with us.
Payment methods for your membership
There are several ways you can make payment for your membership. Please find the option best for you below. We will send you a notification ahead of of when your membership fee is due for payment.
If you're a member of the College or its Faculties and wish to pay for your membership by direct debit instruction, please click here.
You will be directed to the Go Cardless online form to input your details in a secure online environment. You can read their privacy notice here.
If you wish to set up a monthly payment plan, please complete the online form and then email the Membership Engagement team via membership@rcoa.ac.uk to inform us of this request. We will then ensure your membership payment plan is set up accordingly. We do not offer monthly payments to Medical Students due to administration costs being greater than the membership fee.
If you have any questions, require assistance, or would like to set up your direct debit instruction over the phone please contact the Membership Engagement team call 020 7092 1700, Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00, to speak to one of the team.
Members with an existing direct debit instruction:
Please contact the Membership Engagement team via membership@rcoa.ac.uk or call 020 7092 1700, Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00 if you require any changes to your existing direct debit instruction including cancellation or change of bank details. Also, contact us if you wish to change your payment plan to either annual (a one of payment) or monthly.
If you don't have a direct debit set up you can pay for your membership by credit or debit card. There are several ways you can do this:
- Log into your My RCoA online account to make payment securely and quickly online. If you have not activated your My RCoA account, you need to do that first before attempting to make payment. Follow the activation process found here, it’s really important you use the same email address that is on your membership record.
- Call the Membership Engagement team to make payment securely over the phone. The membership phone line is covered Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00, call 020 7092 1700 to speak to one of the team.
