RCoA announce awards

Following recommendations from the Board of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) in Autumn 2023 we are pleased to announce that two Macintosh Professorships have been awarded.  

 

RCoA Macintosh Professor
Dr Ari Ercole is an anaesthetist and intensive care physician, holding a substantive consultant post in neuroscience and intensive care medicine at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  His clinical interests are concentrated on using digital technology and informatics to improve care, in particular after severe neurological injury in the ICU. He is an affiliated associate professor and faculty member of the Cambridge Centre for AI in Medicine, and his research interests are focused on developing novel analytical tools for precision medicine. He has a strong track-record in digital health implementation generally and the application of computing to improve healthcare.

Dr Ercole will be delivering his lecture: “From data to insights via analytics – getting ready for the future of artificial intelligence in and around the ICU” at the hybrid Anaesthetic Updates meeting in September 2024

RCoA & VASGBI Macintosh Professor
Dr Ronelle Mouton
is Honorary Associate Professor of Anaesthesia, Translational Health Sciences, Bristol Medical School.  She is also a Consultant Anaesthetist and academic lead for Anaesthesia at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust. She is an international expert in ischaemic preconditioning and reperfusion injury, has published and presented widely and continues to lead several research studies. She has provided strong leadership and national representation for vascular anaesthesia including working on NAP-7 where she was a key collaborator.

Dr Mouton will be delivering her lecture: “Strategies to optimise outcomes following abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery – challenges and opportunities.” at the hybrid Cardiac disease and anaesthesia symposium in April 2024.

We are pleased to announce details of awards from the September 2023 meeting of our Nominations Committee.

Dr Kariem El-Boghdadly has been awarded the Dudley Buxton Prize for his continued work across the specialty, contributing to the progress of anaesthesia. Particular mention was made of his work during COVID-19, where he led on guidelines into airway management, perioperative care and other areas where the College was directly involved during the pandemic. 

Dr El-Boghdadly is a Consultant Anaesthetist, Clinical Lead and Research and Development Lead for Theatres, Anaesthesia and Perioperative medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He is also Honorary Reader at King’s College London, Scientific Officer of the Difficult Airway Society, and Editor of Anaesthesia Journal. He is extensively published in peer-reviewed literature and book chapters and has written four books.

Kariem will be presented with his award at Anaesthesia 2024

Dr Martin Minich has been awarded the President’s Commendation in recognition of his outstanding support to his trainees. He was nominated for this award by one of his trainees. Dr Minich is a Consultant Anaesthetist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire and a College Tutor supporting a large department of trainees. He is well respected and liked by his trainees and has supported the department in providing and continuing to support the positive atmosphere for them.

Martin will be presented with his award at the College Tutors Meeting 2024

The Novice Guide Group has been awarded the Humphry Davy award in recognition of the enormous amount of work it has done over the last year. The Group has rewritten the Novice Guide, our step-by-step guide to help trainees get started on the training programme. They have also produced a series of online resources including a series of podcasts called NovPod for new trainees to the specialty.

The Group, consisting of Jonathan Chambers, Joe Lipton, Simon Maguire, Oliver Pratt, Matthew Tuck, Eoin Dore, Duncan Kemp, Jo Budd and Karine Zander will be presented with their award at the RCoA Diplomates Day on 6 September 2024
