To celebrate World Anaesthesia Day (16 October 2018), the Royal College of Anaesthetists has today launched a booklet entitled, The Anaesthetist – by your side when it matters. The booklet has been developed for patients and the wider public to better understand the breadth of work undertaken by anaesthetists.

The booklet contains unique and compelling stories from anaesthetists across the specialty, sharing their professional journeys and what keeps them energised about the work they do.

Professor Ravi Mahajan, President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, said:

“This booklet is designed for patients to know where, when and how they might come into contact with an anaesthetist. Incredibly skilled – anaesthetists ensure that patients are always the focus of their attention - they are always by their side when it matters.  We are leaders that are responsible for the delivery of the highest standard of care before, during and after an operation.”

The Anaesthetist – by your side when it matters booklet has also been endorsed by The Patients Association.

Rachel Power, Chief Executive of The Patients Association, said:

“Anaesthetists put patients at ease before an operation, monitor them closely throughout surgery, and ensure patients are pain free following the procedure. This booklet gives an insight into the people behind the hospital masks, and sheds light on their many years of specialist training.”
