In response to the latest NHS staff survey, Dr Ramai Santhirapala, Council Member, Royal College of Anaesthetists said:

“We acknowledge the findings in the NHS staff survey and echo the importance of staff wellbeing. Anaesthetists are crucial to tackling the surgical backlog and they continue to give their all in maintaining high standards of care for both planned and emergency surgery.

"The current shortfall of anaesthetists stands at 1,400, rising to 11,000 by 2040. We will continue to see an impact on staff wellbeing unless the workforce shortfall is addressed.”
