There should be adequate provision of postoperative beds for orthopaedic and trauma patients to allow timely discharge of patients from theatre recovery areas.

The department should have a process to disseminate learning from incidents widely, both within the department and elsewhere in the organisation where appropriate.

Any learning points from feedback and complaints should be identified and shared with all team members and other clinical services where relevant.

Inpatient pain nurse specialists providing education on the wards should have dedicated time for this role distinct from direct clinical duties.

Multidisciplinary support for preoperative assessment staff from other physicians, medical specialists, anaesthetists, surgeons and pain management teams should be available.
