What is FGM?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines FGM as procedures which remove or damage the external female genital organs for no medical reason. It is classified into four major types. Types 1–3 are more easily diagnosed, however in the UK it is thought that many children have type 4 FGM which may be impossible to identify clinically.
