UK Covid-19 Inquiry

The RCoA, Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) and Association of Anaesthetists, were joint core participants in Module 3 of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry. This module examined the impact of the pandemic on healthcare systems, patients, and healthcare workers across the four nations of the UK.

Anaesthetists and intensivists played an invaluable role in the UK’s response to the pandemic, delivering critical care to patients under extreme pressure. They faced numerous challenges, including severe staffing and resources shortages. Their response required exceptional skill, dedication, and personal sacrifice – without which the country could not have managed as it did.

To ensure their contributions and experiences were fully recognised, we submitted a wide range of evidence to the Covid-19 Inquiry, drawing on extensive data and first-hand testimonies from our members.

This is vital to ensure that meaningful lessons are learned and health service deficiencies are addressed so the system is better prepared for future pandemics.
