Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Donaldson was employed at the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen, including as a resident anaesthetist. During the Second World War he served as an Anaesthetist in the Royal Army Medical Corps in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. After demobilisation he returned to an anaesthetic post at the Royal Infirmary in Aberdeen. In 1950 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist at the Gateshead Group of Hospitals, where he remained until his early retirement in 1975.   

Professional interests and activities

Donaldson was a foundation Consultant in the Department of Anaesthesia at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, where he combined the use of spinal and general anaesthesia. He was a member of the British Medical Association, the North of England Society of Anaesthetists, and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.

Other biographical information

He married Jane Smith in 1943 and they had two children. Although he retired due to heart disease, he spent over two more decades enjoying the Kirk, bowling and the Rotary Club. He died at the age of 82, survived by his family.
