Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

On qualifying he was house physician to Sir John McNee at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow, and house surgeon at the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital at Oswestry. Next he entered National Service in the Navy (RNVR), followed by Senior Registrar in Anaesthetics at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow and Assistant Anaesthetist at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow. In 1954 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist at Western Infirmary, Glasgow where he remained until his retirement in 1986.  

Professional interests and activities

In the 1960s he worked in unison with Dr Jim Crawford in a large study on the oucome of chloroform anaesthesia using a Chlorotec vaporizer – they concluded that continued use of chloroform was justified. In parallel Wishart produced ECG traces of chloroformed mice. In the 1970s he began publishing on high spinal block for large bowel surgery, and for control of blood loss in gynaecology – which was the subject of his Presidential Address to the Glasgow & West of Scotland Society of Anaesthetists. In the 1980s he published on spinal anaesthesia for repair of fractured neck of femur, and in general anaesthesia the use of low fresh gas flow with the circle breathing system – which he tirelessly promoted. He was President of the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists for 1984-85.   

Other biographical information

Hugh Wishart married Jennie Knight in 1947 and they had two sons, the younger of whom became a Consultant Ophthalmologist. His second marriage in 1974 to Gertrude Warren produced two daughters. He enjoyed the countryside, cars and jazz. On retirement he moved to Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Dumfries & Galloway
