Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

Soon after graduation Ebsworth was a civilian medical practitioner at Princess Mary’s R.A.F. Hospital at Halton, Buckinghamshire. At the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the RAFVR and served in various base hospitals, becoming an Anaesthetic Specialist. After demobilisation, in 1946 he was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist to University College Hospital (UCH), Assistant Honorary Anaesthetist at the National Dental Hospital, and Anaesthetist at Paddington Green Children’s Hospital. By 1949 he was also Anaesthetist to St Peter’s Hospital, Henrietta Street, London. In the early 1960s he was anaesthetist for the Private Patients Wing of UCH at Gower Street, London. He retired from UCH in 1976. 

Professional interests and activities

He was a member of the Association of Anaesthetists and of the Royal Society of Medicine. From the mid-1960s he was an examiner for the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons of England. At UCH he introduced halothane to the anaesthetic service in 1957. He was renowned for his excellent clinical teaching. Appointed deputy chairman of the medical committee, he was involved in planning the new dental hospital and the accident and emergency hospital. He had a large private practice which included many eminent people, e.g. the Swedish royal family who awarded him the Knight of the Pole Star. 

Other biographical information

In retirement he moved to Chichester, West Sussex where he lived to the age of 85 years, survived by his wife Penelope.
