Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After qualifying Little undertook house jobs at Queens Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, followed by Senior Resident Anaesthetist at Gt. Barr E.M.S. Hospital. In 1943 he joined the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve (RAFVR) Medical Branch, where he attained the rank of Sqn. Ldr. (Anaesthetic Specialist). After demobilisation he was appointed in 1947 as Anaesthetic Registrar at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, proceeding to Senior Registrar. In 1948 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist to the Neurosurgical Unit of the United Birmingham Hospitals. In the early 1950s he was also appointed Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia at the University of Birmingham. Later he was Lecturer in both the Medical and Dental Schools. On health grounds he was obliged to take early retirement in 1972.
Professional interests and activities
He was a member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland, and of the Midland Society of Anaesthetists. In 1959 he was co-author of a paper on acute hypertension developing under anaesthesia due to a phaeochromocytoma. Acquiring an interest in the use of hypnosis for tooth extraction he published on medical hypnosis in 1962. Prominent in the Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis he organised courses and became its President.
Other biographical information
In 1965 he married Marion, who was his companion in retirement when he had to rehabilitate after cervical laminectomies. He then continued his interest in medical hypnosis. In 1987 they moved to Hallow in south Worcestershire where he enjoyed the countryside until his death at the age of 80 years.
