Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After graduation Dr Owen (as he was registered) undertook house jobs at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. By 1937 he was Medical Superintendent and the following year he became Radium Registrar at St Mary’s Hospital. During the Second World War he was an Anaesthetic Specialist in the Royal Army Medical Corps (TA). By 1947 he was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist to St Mary’s Hospital, Croyden General Hospital, and Florence Nightingale Hospital for Gentlewomen. After the start of the NHS he was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist to the same hospitals, retiring about 1976.
Professional interests and activities
He was a member of the British Medical Association, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Association of Anaesthetists. In the early 1950s he was Sub-Dean of St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. He continued to serve in the TA, rising to the rank of Col. Anaesthetic Specialist. By the 1960s he was appointed Hon. Surgeon to H.M. the Queen. Besides an early paper on anaesthesia for tonsillectomy, he wrote the chapter on anaesthetics in ”Careers in Medicine” (Williams), 1952.
Other biographical information
He was captain of various sports teams, excelling in rugby football. In 1938 he married Helen Helder and they had two daughters and a son. In retirement he continued to play golf and enjoyed opera, particularly Gilbert and Sullivan. He died at the age of 90 years, survived by his family.
