Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After graduation she undertook house officer posts at King’s College Hospital and at Horton Emergency Hospital in Epsom, Surrey. By 1948 she was a resident anaesthetist at the Royal Hospital, Wolverhampton. She moved the following year to the post of junior assistant anaesthetist at the Middlesex Hospital in London, where she became Anaesthetic Registrar in 1950 and Senior Registrar in 1953. Next she took on the post of Research Assistant in the Institute of Clinical Research at the Middlesex Hospital 1955-59. She was appointed Visiting Anaesthetist at St Andrew’s Hospital, Dollis Hill in 1960 and by 1975 became part time anaesthetist for South West Thames Regional Health Authority. Although she retired in 1979, she briefly undertook a locum anaesthetic job in Saudi Arabia.
Professional interests and activities
She was a member of the British Medical Association. In 1953 she published a paper on cardiac arrest and another on anaesthesia for radiological investigations in neurosurgery.
Other biographical information
She married Handley Montague Townsend Coles in 1947 and they had four children. In retirement she moved with her husband to Wales, where she enjoyed the countryside, gardening, music and family visits. Her last years were marred by a series of transient ischaemic attacks. Predeceased by her husband and second son, she died at the age of 79, survived by her remaining three children and eight grandchildren.
