Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After qualifying Angel was first a resident anaesthetist, and secondly a non-resident intern in midwifery at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. In 1934 he entered general practice in Launceston, Cornwall with sessions in anaesthetics at Launceston Hospital, district medical officer and insurance work. After the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve (RAFVR) Medical Branch. By 1945 he had attained the rank of Sqn. Ldr. and served as a Specialist Anaesthetist in an RAF General Hospital. On demobilisation in 1947, he became Honorary Anaesthetist to the Prince of Wales Hospital, Plymouth and to Launceston Hospital. From 1948 he was Consultant Anaesthetist to Tavistock Hospital (Devon). In 1952 his Consultant appointment was extended to the many South Devon and East Cornwall Hospitals including Plymouth – in which role he continued until his retirement.
Professional interests and activities
He was a member of Plymouth Medical Society, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland. While in the RAFVR he met Air Commodore Robert Mackintosh, who sent him to be in charge of anaesthetics in Iceland. In 1951 he contributed to a paper on an operating-table arm rest. While a Consultant in Plymouth he initiated a pain and diagnostic clinic. He served a term as President of the Society of Anaesthetists of the South Western Region.
Other biographical information
He married Dorothy E. Watts in 1932 and they had a son, Charles. In retirement he lived at Boswyn, Launceston, Cornwall where he died at the age of 91, survived by his family.
