In this third part of our Global Anaesthesia podcast miniseries, Jan and Fi talk to Dr Emma Coley and Dr Anna Janowicz about their experiences in Zambia and Ethiopia on the Global Anaesthesia Development Programme (GADP), and its Zambian offshoot, ZADP.

From applying low resource-setting solutions  back in the UK and appreciating the dedication of local clinical teams to the world's largest fruit bat migration, Emma and Anna bring some rich insights from their experiences in global anaesthesia to the conversation.

Dr Jan Man Wong

Dr Jan Man Wong is an ST6 trainee at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She qualified from Norwich Medical School in 2013 and trained in anaesthetics in London since then. Her interests are in paediatric and obstetric anaesthesia as well as improving postgraduate education.

Jan is one of the two UK Anaesthetic Representatives at GASOC (Global Anaesthesia Surgery Obstetric Collaboration), a co-opted member of the Global Partnership Committee.

Dr Fiona Linton

Dr Fiona Linton qualified from Cardiff University in 2009. She is an anaesthetics registrar, currently ST5, in the Wessex Deanery.

She has undertaken 4 previous trips with Mercy Ships, which further inspired her interest in global surgery and anaesthesia. She is one of the UK GASOC (Global Anaesthesia, Surgery and Obstetric Collaboration) Anaesthetic representatives and was involved with organising their annual international conference last year.

Dr Emma Coley

Emma is a Consultant Anaesthetist working at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, specialising in cardiothoracic and emergency anaesthesia.  She is the secretary and a trustee for Global Anaesthesia Development Partnerships (GADP), involved in logistics, teaching and trainee recruitment.  Emma took part in ZADP in 2015 as a senior trainee.

Emma represents GADP and the military on the Global Partnerships Committee at the Royal College of Anaesthetists.  

Dr Anna Janowicz

Anna is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and a chair of the EADP Committee.  Her interest in global health started in medical school when she got involved in advocacy for healthcare access for refugees and also travelled to Ghana and Thailand for her electives. In 2015 Anna went to Lusaka for six months to support MMed Anaesthesia Program as a ZADP fellow.

Anna taught on SAFE courses in Zambia, Nepal and India. She has subsequently completed MSc in Global Health with Health Professions Education at King’s College London. She is also a member of the World Anaesthesia Society committee and a Remote Educational Supervisor with the RCoA.
