RCoA response to NHS England’s 10 Point Plan to improve resident doctors’ working lives

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has responded to NHS England’s 10 Point Plan to improve resident doctors’ working lives.

Dr Claire Shannon, President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists said:

“It’s encouraging to see NHS England direct trusts to take specific action on commitments made to resident doctors last year, which we have been advocating for some time. While these proposals are not new, we hope the 12-week timeframe and the requirement to report on progress may bring the urgency that has been lacking in delivering tangible improvements.

“We’re pleased to see a firm commitment to expand the Lead Employer model, which the College has consistently called for. Our members often report that the demands of rotational training are made harder by incorrect or delayed pay, repetition of mandatory training and other unnecessary administrative barriers.

“While this directive applies to England, we hope to see similar action taken across the UK, so that all resident doctors benefit from the fair and consistent working conditions they deserve.”
