Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Alberts was a resident medical officer at Bexhill Hospital, East Sussex. In 1947 he entered the RAFVR medical branch as a Flight Lt. By 1949 he was a resident anaesthetist at Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge, and in 1951 he became a registrar in anaesthesia at Southend General Hospital. In 1953 he was appointed Senior Registrar in Anaesthesia at the Southampton District hospitals. Finally in 1955 he was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at the North Cambridgeshire and Doddington Hospitals group, where he stayed  for the remainder of his career. Unfortunately his career was shortened by illness for several months preceding  his final passing in 1981.  

Professional interests and activities

Dr Alberts, during his career  established an intensive care unit at the North Cambridgeshire Hospital which according to the author of his obituary was a significant achievement for a small 92 bed community hospital where he was the only anaesthetist for many years. Quoting his obituary, he is described as a competent and careful anaesthetist. He was a member of the hospital management commitee along with several other  committees within the hospital. He was a member of the Association of Anaesthetists. Early in his clinical career he was a leading campaigner  for the introduction of flame resistant clothing in children having witnessed several children with burn injuries. 

Other biographical information

Dr Alberts married Joy Elsie Tilt, a nurse, in 1947 and they had three sons and a daughter. He was actively involved in local politics and represented the Labour Party as a member of the Wisbech Borough Council, later changing allegiance and joining the Liberal Party. Additionally he was a member of the Wisbech Rotary Club and governor of several local schools. He passed away at the age of 59 years, survived by his wife and children.
