Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After graduation McKinlay was House Surgeon at East Fortune Base Hospital in East Lothian, Scotland. In 1941 he was appointed resident anaesthetist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE). With Morrison and Wheeler, he was one of “the three musketeers” in John Gillies’ original Department of Anaesthetics. By 1944 he served as an anaesthetist for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS). In 1947-48 he went to Vienna, Austria with the RAMC. He returned to work as an anaesthetist at the RIE and by 1950 he also had sessions at the Deaconess Hospital. He was appointed a Consultant Anaesthetist at the RIE in 1956. From the 1960s he was also employed at the Elsie Inglis Maternity Hospital. He remained in his RIE post until 1977, when he retired due to illness.
Professional interests and activities
He was a member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland. Locally he served on the Council of the (then) Association of Anaesthetists of Edinburgh in 1950.
Other biographical information
He married Jemima King McQueen in 1943 and they had three sons and two daughters; the eldest (son) became a paediatric neurologist. He enjoyed golf, singing in the Baptist Church choir, and travelling in his smart cars around Scotland.
