Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Holms undertook a house job in 1925 at the tuberculosis sanatorium in Bridge of Weir, Scotland. He moved in February 1926 to an assistantship in general practice at Spalding, Lincolnshire leading to his appointment there as a principal with anaesthetic sessions from October 1925. In October 1949 he was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Grantham, Lincoln and Newark Hospitals in which post he remained until his retirement in 1964. He continued to work as a peripatetic dental anaesthetist until 1979.   

Professional interests and activities

Holms was a member of the British Medical Association and served as chairman of two of its divisions. He was chairman of the Grantham Hospital Medical Committee from 1962 to 1964. 

Other biographical information

He married Margaret Tunnard in 1931 and they had three children. The son and one of the two daughters became an orthopaedic surgeon and a general practitioner respectively. Throughout his adult life Archibald Holms enjoyed playing the piano and woodwind musical instruments, as well as chess and bridge. He died at the age of 95, survived by his family.
