Proposals for implementation of the resolutions carried at the EGM held on 17 October were discussed again at our Council and Board of Trustees meetings in December. We would like to update you on our progress and the decisions made so far.

Dr Daphne Varveris is a Consultant Anaesthetist in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and Scottish CMO Speciality Advisor for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. Daphne trained in Manchester, London, and Glasgow prior to taking up a consultant post in 2002. She served as a College Tutor for six years and continues to support training as an educational supervisor.
Chapter 13: Guidelines for the Provision of Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Services 2025
Sharp needle based blocks (e.g. peribulbar or retrobulbar block) should only be administered by medically qualified personnel, because of the increased risks of life-threatening complications.2 Intravenous access should be established prior to performing sharp needle blocks and also for any patient deemed to be at high risk due to severe comorbidity.2
