Announcement of candidates: Election to Council

Elections for two vacancies on the Council of the Royal College of Anaesthetists will open a week from today – Monday 16 November. This follows a call for nominations which was issued to the membership on 21 September 2020.

Those who will be standing for election are listed below (in the order their applications were received). Terms of office begin in March 2021.

Consultant vacancies (one to elect)

  • Andrew Fairley Smith (Royal Lancaster Infirmary)
  • Sudhansu Kumar Pattnaik (Queen’s Hospital, Romford)
  • Ramai Santhirapala (Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust)
  • Dhushy Surendra Kumar (University Hospital, Coventry)

SAS Vacancy (one to elect)

  • Kirstin May (Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)
  • Olivera Potparic (Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust)
  • Ashwini Keshkamat (Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust)

Who can vote?

Voting eligibility is set out in the College’s Charter & Ordinances and is specific to the category of each vacancy.

Those eligible to vote for the Consultant vacancy are:

  • Fellows
  • Associate Fellows
  • Members
  • Associate Members
  • Trainees
  • Senior Fellows and Members.

Those eligible to vote for the SAS vacancy are:

  • Members
  • Associate Members.

There is no trainee vacancy in this election.

Next steps

To help us to ensure that the process is independent and fair we are again using leading ballot services provider Civica Election Services (CES) to conduct the election.

Electronic ballots will be sent by email to eligible voters on 16 November 2020 to the email address that you had registered with the College as of 2 November 2020. Look out for a message from RCoAvote@cesvotes.com.

Your ballot email will take you to an election website where you can read the candidates’ statements and cast your vote.

You need to vote by no later than midday on 14 December 2020.
