RCoA seeks new authors for GPAS chapters

Published: 24/11/2025

The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) is currently looking for authors to take part in a full review of selected chapters from the Guidelines for the Provision of Anaesthetic Services (GPAS) for publication in 2027.

Chapter development and review

All of our GPAS chapters are developed by subject matter experts, using a rigorous and evidence based process. As part of this process, the RCoA commits to undertake a full review of each chapter every five years. We are looking for consultants or autonomously practising anaesthetists with experience in managing a service, and developing guidelines or similar documents, to contribute to the review of the following GPAS chapters:

What does being an author involve?

Each chapter is written by between four and six authors. The authors are responsible for reviewing the existing chapter text, assessing current referencing and new literature for inclusion, drafting potential changes to the chapter, grading the literature and recommendations, and responding to consultation feedback.

As an author you will be required to attend author’s meetings via MS Teams throughout the review process, however the majority of correspondence will be via email.

Authors are supported by a GPAS Editor who is responsible for ensuring the chapter framework and style guide is adhered to, and a member of College staff who coordinates and project manages the development and review process.

Each chapter will also have a Chapter Development Group (CDG) consisting of subject matter experts, anaesthetists of all grades, relevant specialist societies and a lay representative. The CDG are responsible for providing feedback to the authors during the drafting process.

How do I apply?

If you are interested in applying to become a GPAS author on any of the chapters listed above please visit the RCOA volunteer vacancies page. Applications will be open until 12 December.

Authors will be able to claim CPD points for their contribution.

If you have any questions about the roles then please contact: GPAS@rcoa.ac.uk.
