How to increase your internet speed

It is recommended to have an internet speed of at least 25mbps. To check your internet speed please refer to the following link: https://www.speedtest.net/

If, according to the speed test, your internet connection is under 30mbps, it is recommended that you take extra measures to make sure you improve your internet speed. The measures you can take to improve your internet speed are:

Before the Exam
1.    Switch off unused devices from your network.
Any devices that are on your network and are not being used for the exam may interfere with your network bandwidth.

2.    Move your router to a better (preferably closer) location.

3.    Getting an ethernet cable
Ethernet usually provides a faster internet connection. Your router should have a few Ethernet ports, so all you need is an Ethernet cable (with an RJ45 connector).

4.    Extending the bandwidth of your internet connection via your router
Wi-Fi signals are divided into channels. Sometimes, if people around you are using the same channels, your connection can be slowed down. Switching to a different channel on your router may solve this problem. Your router should have the appropriate instructions, or you could look it up online with regards to your specific model.
You should find instructions in your router interface. Please check for channels 1, 6 or 11. Most modern routers come in 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz bandwidths. Depending on the settings, you may be able to prioritise one over the other.

5.    Get a Wi-Fi extender (repeater) These devices plug into your spare wall socket, connect tot the wireless internet beamed out by your router, then extend it further.

During the Exam
If your network connection during the exam is either poor or has stalled, try the following (please note, the IT Support Analyst will support you with any issues you have on the day)

1.    Hotspot your Phone
The instructions for this can be found here.

2.    Check for and close any other programs/application you have open.

3.    Restart your router
If you do not have hotspot or if you are still having internet trouble, restart your router. This may take time to do - please contact the exams department.
